Redeeming Shawshank

So last year when I saw the ever-so-brilliant recut Shining trailer, i was inspired to do something similar... I wanted to take a very solemn movie and turn it into another dumb Vince Vaughn / Owen Wilson comedy... so I started working on this - "Redeeming Shawshank" and 10 months later it's finally finished. I think it turned out pretty well. Anyhow, check it out.

B.H.R.

It's your favorite early nineties hardcore punk band! B.H.R.! What does does B.H.R. stand for? Butt Hole Rebellion? Big Honkey Rednecks? By Heavenly Request? Beelzebub's Honor Roll? Who cares! It's punk rock! Aargh! You might recall B.H.R. from such hits as, "Trestles Will Be Mine", "Beaners Stuck Underwater" and "Psycho Grandma". I just came across this album last night and for some reason it made me pretty happy.
Here's a couple of MP3 tracks for your punk rock pleasure.

  • Dr.Martens

  • Everything

  • Here's the back cover. The shirtless guy singing is my friend Mark "The Shark" Howe. He was also in this surf-punk outfit known as "The Immortals". He's still rockin' out today, but I don't recall who he's playing with now.

What a handsome bunch of decent looking young men...wait...is...that...

    Some Things Speak For Themselves

Oi! This Is England (Teaser Trailer)

I saw this on the Dancin' Mood Board. "Oi! This Is England" is an upcoming film by British filmmaker, Shane Meadows. Set in 1983, It's an autobiographical look at his growing up in England as a young skinhead who runs in with the National Front. At first I was put off by the thought of yet ANOTHER movie about racist skins... then I saw the trailer and was blown away. I couldn't believe how great this looks. Finally, the accurate movie about skinheads that I've been waiting for! I'm just sad I didn't make it. :)

It recently screened at the London Film Festival and now they have a teaser/trailer up.

    CHECK THIS TRAILER OUT!

EDIT: Parka couldn't see it at worked so I did the world a favor and YouTube'd it.

    Ska - For ska's sake - Various Artists 1989

It's hard to express the effect this album had on me. This represents the state of European ska 10 years after 2-tone.
Some of this is so cheesy and some of this is brilliant. But for the teenage me it was a musical salvation and I was too young to decifer the difference. "Another Town" by Mr. Review remains one of my favorite songs of all time. "Skadansk" by Mark Foggo's Skasters is SO cheeseball that I couldn't handle it. But today I celebrate you, Mark! I Celebrate you all!
I hope you enjoy...this is my youth.

The Jam - Marc Bolan Show - All Around The World Live

OK so this isn't my first time posting something about the Jam, but I had to share. My friend Micah told me about this and it's pretty amazing. The Jam guest starring on the Marc Bolan(from T. Rex) Show. This shows how strange mod was emerging from the glam era. Marc Bolan is so regal! So amazing, so bizarre.

    "Jam!"

    So dude, where's Tyler?

Here's a sample of some freelance work I recently did for the Disney Channel. I did the lettering for the titlecard and da boyz' names at the beginning. I'd assume that I wasn't credited because it was some quick last minute freelance. Regardless, I'm very grateful for the oppurtunity to do it. Thanks you Mike Moon!

    The Untouchables in Repo Man

I think this is when I first thought Rude Boys were so awesome.
We used to watch the taped-off TV version of Repo Man as kids. We idolized punk rock, but these scooter guys(The Untouchables) were the only thing I thought was cooler than the punkers in this movie. They were all 60's sharp and yet tall and intimidating when they walked into this shot. You knew that Otto was toast.
Well, whatever you might think of the Untouchables today, they were very important to the American mod/ska scene. Yes there is a big 80's cheese factor, but The Untouchables were seminal. I kinda thought that it was like Jerry Dammers passing the torch when I found out that he produced I SPY(FOR THE FBI). I understand the Untouchables were also California's first scooter club. Much respect, live and let dance.

    (insert rad reverby surf guitar)

"It's very simple, Mrs. Parks. You don't want me to take it, and I don't want to. I said to my boss: Look, I don't want to repossess this lady's car."

"How was rehearsal, son?" -------- "Okay. Who's this?"

"This is Mr. Otto, deary. From the finance company. He told me he isn't going to take the car this time, even though he could."

    "Well...gotta get going."

(from inside) "...I'm tired of giving you money, and you squandering it. You all went out dancing somewhere!" (Otto revs her car and we find it's up on jacks)

"Hey, everything's cool! I like music too, man!" (Biff! Bang! Pow!!)

    The Revillos (AKA the Rezillos)

I've been listening to the Rezillos a lot lately, but it wasn't 'til I checked out my friend Cornelieus Danger's blog that I've seen this video. They're so good!
Here's a little known trivia tidbit: The Bodysnatchers Rhoda Dakar was hailed as being, "Ruder Than You" because of her boss beehive-boof. But she joined the Bodysnatchers with her hair that way because she was a Rezillos fan.
    Anyhow, digit.

    SO LONG, SUCKERS!!!

    Yep, the rumors are true.

I have decided to totally uproot myself & my family from "totally rippin'" Orange County, California in exchange for the quiet life of rural Pennsylvania. The big date is August 22nd. We're going to be living with my brother-in-law in Elizabethtown, PA until we can find a permanant residence nearby (not to mention employment). It's a small town just ten miles south of Hershey (YES!!) and an hour and a half south-west of Philedelphia. I'm going to learn the ropes of being an east-coaster. It should be quite interesting.

I don't imagine myself ever moving back to California, but I'm sure we'll come to visit once a year or so if we can make it.

    so... yeah.

So my brother was in this short film that his friend Corky Quackenbush made back in 1989. It's pretty funny. I happen to have a VCR hooked up to my computer right now, so I thought why not YouTube it?

So I had to break it into two parts because YouTube wouldn't allow videos over 10 minues each... so watch it in order or you'll be all messed up.

80's new wave pop video treasure trove

As I mentioned in my last post, my older siblings used to tape videos off Video One (with Richard Blade) back in the day... This period lasted between '83 and '85 (I was born in '77 just so you know). We had volumes and volumes of Betamaxx tapes full of the hottest new wave, pop and rock videos of the day. I used to watch these when I had nothing else to do. Watching the Cure sing "Let's Go To Bed" was just as entertaining to me as watching Bert and Ernie or the Great Space Coaster.

So with the magic of YouTube I decided to compile a playlist of every video I could remember that we had on tap. This isn't an exhaustive list by any means. I'm sure I'm forgetting tons (Parka? any suggestions?), and there were a few I couldn't find ("Ride The White Pony" or "State of Shock" by the Jacksons for example). But I figure 150 videos ain't too bad.

Keep in mind, for every great video in this list, there's a real stinker. A few I didn't even want to put on here, but I had no choice. :) So if you have time and want to peek into my childhood musical tastes, check it out!!

Mental As Anything - Spirit Got Lost (1984)

This video is a lost treasure to the Jacobs family.
We taped it off of Richard Blade's local video show, "Video One" Looking at it today, one would say it's super hokey, but us Jacobs boys thought it was super rad! We watched it a lot. Tyler accidentally taped over it and we all got mad. Tyler found this on youtube and has paid a weighty 22 year debt.

    The Cupcake Show!

I hope to sell my first painting...

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CUPCAKES ARE THE THEME FOR THE ACADEMY AND FROSTED CUPCAKERY’S ARTWALK SHOW!

    May 18, 2006

Long Beach, California - The Academy Store, located in the downtown artist district and cupcake bakery Frosted Cupcakery, located in the beach community of Belmont Shore, have teamed up for the Last Saturday Art Walk at The Academy 433 E. 1st Street on May 27th from 7-11pm. The theme of the evening will be cupcakes. They will be presenting works of art by 15 different up-and-coming artists, as well as tasty treats provided by Frosted.

The Academy, owned by John Mendez and Mike De La Vega, offers a selection of reasonably priced apparel, accessories, housewares and select vintage goods from under the radar designers. The charming minimalist décor of The Academy, along with its forest wallpaper scene and mounted buck head, contributes to the entire environment of a shop built by artists, for artists.

Frosted Cupcakery, owned by a mother and daughter duo, Nancy Hanley and Stacia Samartan, was inspired by a love of cupcakes and a lifetime of memories set in their family kitchen. The modern aesthetic of Frosted is accompanied by a home baked quality that is meant to evoke feelings of nostalgia. Cupcakes are sold individually or by the dozen at 195 Claremont Avenue, Long Beach, CA 90808.

So if you are in the neighborhood on the last Saturday of May, be sure to stop by the artist district of Long Beach for some cupcakes, art and friendly conversation.

    MODS May Day '79

Don't you love it when people share?
  • MOD 64 Blog
  • Jay Ward concepts

As a kid growing up in North Hollywood, we frequented (the now defunct) Dudley Do-Right's Emporium on Sunset Blvd. It was run by the late Jay Ward's family and even located on the block they resided on. This was the storefront gift shop for the Jay Ward Animation studios. That place deeply effected me. It wasn't some cheap liscensed out Bullwinkle store but it was the remains of this former TV empire. The stuff they sold was stuff they made in the 60's that went for way below what it was worth because Jay's family probably didn't know the value of it. Maybe there just wasn't a market for it in the 80's because that was the time when "vintage" just meant "old". I don't know...But they sold authentic memorabilia; Statehood for Mooselvania water decals, real felt Dudly Do-Right mountie hats, old Bullwinkle fan club newsletters and if you wanted a shirt they'd go back and Iron-transfer what style you wanted right there.

The Jay Ward style and humor is something that has (for the most part) unintentionally influenced my work from the Aquabats to what I do everyday at Paul Frank. People always tell me the the Aquabat logo looks too much like Boris Badenoff. I didn't do it that way on purpose, though that style is one of my favorite influences. You are what you eat?

Anyhow, when I stumbled across these old concepts something struck me inside that I couldn't describe. It's like E.T. finding his mothership. Enjoy!

    Merc Toys Series 2

Oooooh yeaeeeaah! The Merc has made more of our favourite toys for all of you Brit subculture nuts. Here come Neville, Stevie, Johnny and Peggy. This time I'm afraid that they've gotten a little too close to who they are stereo-typing. "Stevie" looks exactly like Steve Marriot from the Small Faces. "Neville" the rude boy figure is close enough the Specials' Neville Staples for legal action and 'Johnny" is so blatantly Rotten it's sick. It's close enough that out of those 3 pop icons that some money sniffing lawyers will come out of the woodwork ready to gouge. "Peggy" just resembles yer typical skinbyrd with a chelsea cut that they threw in the mix(unless I overlooked something). Well whether the Merc gets sued or not, they are pretty cool and I want one. My birthday''s coming up pretty soon...:D

    Sunday, May 14, 2006

So i'm going to take this chance to give a shout out to my mom. She's a really super lady and loves our band so what more can you really ask for? Let me also include this story about her:
A couple of weeks ago her and my dad were on a cruise. she went to get a pizza and so my dad told her to meet him at the back of the boat. They met back up a while later. My dad asked what happened and why she never came. She told him that she walked around for a while; couldn't find him (aka the back of the boat) and got hungry so she sat down to eat her pizza by herself. Not too many people need directions to find the back of a boat but my mom's one of them and I think my pops loves it because she'll never leave him for fear of getting lost.

#1 I'd like to know what kind of a response I'd get if I tried to auction(?) off some original paintings. I need a little extra dough to get www.parkerjacobs.com back up and running. Plus, I have been getting some promising interest concerning the G13 cartoon and I need some resources. Is this a good forum to bounce this idea off of? Please reply, because I'd seriously like to know.

#2 We'd like to send Cris Crumpet- Boy Trumpet off on his upcoming not-so-secret mission with a little help. Therefore, G13 needs to put on a benefit show, ASAP! I've got to make some phonecalls...

I was listening to the Pipettes today and I thought that maybe I'd share. I guess they’re the up & coming thing in England right now. They are going for the whole “girl group" revival thing. Vintage Ska Album Covers

I have a mild obsession for vintage album covers. Like back when I was a kid, my parents gave me the choice between buying,"The Smurfs All Star Show" on Vinyl or cassette. Even back then I knew that vinyl was going the way of the dinosaur and that cassettes don't scratch. Regardless, I opted for the record because I could listen to it while gazing at the super awesome album cover artwork. But I digress...
About a year a go when I was working for SHAG, I stumbled across Under The Hat from Amsterdam. A Super cool site in itself, check it out the Ska Album covers.

VIDEO: Monster - Aint Going Nowhere

In The fourth and final video in our Monster video series, we see the guys walking the streets at night and having a showdown with a rival gang of hippies (...?). This was the first thing I ever saw or heard of Monster and at first I couldn't tell if it I hated it or if it was the coolest thing ever. I decided on the latter. For any of you Go-Go 13 junkies, you'll now know where their song "monster" came from.

This song kinda illustrates their transition in music. Their final album "Gone Gone Gone / A Bash Dem" was much less punk and much more soul. (they did an excellent cover of Lauren Hill's "Ex-Factor") When they finally reformed as Moneybrother, the soul influence was unmistakeable.

So enjoy this video. It reminds me of The Warriors meets Hair or Jesus Christ Superstar. A bit weird... but embrace it. These guys are genius.

    GOOD SHOW G13!
