Disc 1

The Upbeat : A Utah Ska Documentary

The Upstarts, a ska band from Salt Lake City, Utah, is getting ready to release their debut album. There is only one problem: there isn't much of a ska scene these days. This hasn't always been the case. In the 90's, Utah experienced an explosion of ska that some argue was comparable to the ska scenes in Los Angeles and Boston.

"The UpBeat" traces the history of ska and the influence the genre has had on the Utah music scene. Featuring interviews with Frederick "Toots" Hibbert (Toots and the Maytals), Buster Bloodvessel (Bad Manners), Vic Ruggierro & Dave Hillyard (The Slackers), and Robert "Bucket" Hingley (The Toasters). Also including influential local musicians Swim Herschel Swim, Stetch Armstrong, My Man Friday, Model Citizen, GOGO13 and Insatiable.

57 Minutes - color - stereo

THE UP BEAT MOVIE!!!

I'm thrilled about Brandon Smith's Utah Ska documentary, "The Upbeat" because it has so much do with my favorite music and even a little bit of my own personal history. It's centered around Utah's upcoming The Upstarts and the history of the Utah ska scene. It features interviews from The Slackers, Toots Hibbert, Bucket from the Toasters and Buster Bloodvesssel. Also, Utah ska legends, Swim Herschel Swim and Stretch Armstrong to name just a few...oh and then...GOGO13? I laugh. Many of the photos contributed are taken from my old pals; ska promoter, Racquel and her ex-Boyfriend Dustin "Skip" Blad of the early GOGO13 incarnation. I find it hilarious to see pictures of my younger brother in our teenage bedroom in the same documentary with likes of Toots and old fatty himself! HAHAHA! Tyler also had some involvement and is accredited with associate producer status! Way to go everybody!

Moot Local

Finally it's here! The Director's Cut Special 12th Anniversary Edition of MOOT LOCAL!

What is "Moot Local" you ask? Only the biggest groundbreaking achievement in american cinema since the introduction of "talkies"! Ok, well maybe not THAT great, but at least it's better than The Matrix (not that that's saying much.. OK, that's just my opinion...)

Actually, Moot Local is a short student film I made for my high school film class back 1995 in Bountiful, Utah. It's about a girl who gets stuck in a the city and has to find her way back home... hilarity insues.

I digitized it a couple years back and have been recutting it, color correcting it, fixing the soundtrack, etc. in my free time. I finally finished it to where I'm happy with it, and so here it is, for your viewing pleasure.

And now you can finally enjoy the deluxe george-lucas-rewriting-history-star-wars-edition of my masterpiece, "Moot Local"

The Piranhas - Tom Hark

I pulled this out of the massive, "songs G13 should cover" pile. It's the Piranhas version of the old tune, "Tom Hark". I know of a Millie Small ska version and also a skinhead reggae version by The Dynamites. But what makes this important (other than it charting in the top ten) is it that it later became a footie anthem that is still chanted by British sports fans and hooligans to this day. It has later been repackaged and marketed directly to soccer (I'm sorry, Futbol) fans and even covered by Seagulls Ska and our beloved Bad Manners.

The Piranhas were a punk band from Britian's briny blue beaches of Brighton. "Tom Hark" entered the charts in 1980; smack dab in the middle of the whole 2-tone craze. I understand that since they were primarily a punk band with no follow up ska song to match, The Piranhas fell into the pigeon hole of "the one-hit wonders" and broke up. Super catchy song though, eh?

Here they are in all of their glory as #26 on Top of the Pops. I love the drum kit set up in the front and the fishes for drum sticks. Hey! What's with the guitar playing with gloves on! We know you guys are lip synching and you know you guys are lip synching...could you try a little harder and fake it for us better? :D

2 Tone Archive Photos

I didn't know about this when the exhibition came out. It's a collection of photos documenting the 2tone era. The Body Snatchers, The Selecter, Madness & Bad Manners shot in various locations back in the day. I like the ska.
