Tyler's Top 10 Albums of 2006

**DISCLAIMER** THE FOLLOWING IS SOLELY THE OPINION OF MR. TYLER JACOBS AND DOES NOT IN ANY WAY REFLECT THE OPINIONS OF GOGO13, ANY OF ITS COUNTERPARTS NOR THE INDIVIDUAL MEMBERS THEREOF. LINKS ARE PROVIDED FOR DOWNLOADING AND ENJOYING. BUY THE CD IF YOU HAVE THE MEANS. THANK YOU.

JUST IN TIME!! I really had to think long about this, which is odd because I listened to plenty of music last year. Maybe I listened to stuff that that came out earlier? Maybe I didn’t listen to a wide variety of stuff? Who knows? But here’s my list of favorite records that came out in 2006. And one month into 2007, I can already name about five of the years best albums. BUT that is neither here nor there… So here’s last years.

10. Charlotte Gainsbourg - 5:55

As the daughter of Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin, Charlotte has some pretty big shoes to fill. With the help of producers Air and Jarvis Cocker, it turns out just right. The mellow music hearkens to Serge’s Melody Nelson period and equally Air’s Moon Safari record. This is a great mellow record that is lovely and haunting. It hasn’t been released in the states yet… but I’m sure it will be soon.

9. Ratatat - Classics

I find it hard to argue that that this was a great record. It kept the same consistency with their self-titled debut, and yet it branched out in many different directions. Every song is still instrumental featuring their stomping backward guitar sound, but they’ve experimented with lots of different instruments, musical styles and techniques. It’s far more fulfilling than their debut which sorta blurred together after “Seventeen Years”. “Montanita”, “Tacobel Canon” and “Wildcat” are standouts for me, but it’s solid through and through. My friend Octavio (who’s really into hip-hop for the most part) really dug this record saying something to the effect of, “I love instrumental music lately. Music with lyrics is just someone telling you their opinion. I’m sick of that.” Good point my friend.

8. Beck - The Information
I’m surprised that this record got so little respect in end-of-the year lists. Especially after all the acclaim that Guero got back in 2005. The Information does sound like a continuation of Guero (or even of Odelay if you mind), but it’s even more experimental, even more out-there. Beck’s idea of making this an more open-sourced album was revolutionary. Not only did he provide the listener with do-it-yourself cover art, but he filmed a video for every song on the album (as well as a few remixes) and put them on a companion DVD. How cool is that? I also have reason to believe that they purposely mixed this record to make it easier for DJs to remix and mash-up. Between “Elevator Music”, “New Round”, “The Information” and practically every other track, this record was listenable and abstract. Solid through and through.

7. The Pipettes - We Are The Pipettes
The Pipettes are rad because they know they’re a gimmick. They admit that they were a concept before they ever wrote songs. Luckily their songs turned out great. I can’t think of any group in recent memory that has done a genuinely authentic throwback to Phil Spectre era girl groups. I personally love that sound and it’s a shame it didn’t stick around. But thanks to the Pipettes, we got it back. All their songs are super fun and well written. Marylynn fell in love with this record far more than I did (but I still like it a lot). “Pull Shapes” makes me want to freak out, it’s so fun. “Judy” “ABC” “We Are the Pipettes” and “Sex” are just loads of fun. We need more bands like this.

6. Belle and Sebastian - The Life Pursuit
I didn’t like this album at first, but I’m starting to like it a bit. It’s still growing on me. This is strange because I consider Belle and Sebastian one of my favorite bands. But this record is really different. It just doesn’t have the same vibe as they have had in the past. Of course they can’t all be like “If You’re Feeling Sinister”, but this is even a departure from their last record, “Dear Catastrophe Waitress”. It just… I don’t know. I still like it. It’s good, but B&S should be in my top three. Not this far down the list.

5. The Decemberists - The Crane Wife

I like this record. I like it more every time I hear it. The Decemberists broaden their scope with this record. It’s a bit of a concept album (what concept that is, I’m not quite sure, but then again I never really “get” concept albums). Something based on a Japanese proverb of a guy being married to a crane that … dies or something? I don’t know. The Decemberists seem to be like a staple for my generation. Everyone has to like them or something. But I don’t care. The songs are great all the way through. It makes me happy. I love “O Valencia”, “Sons and Daughters”, “Summersong” and I get chills every time I hear the intro of “The Crane Wife”.

4. Lily Allen - Alright, Still

I first heard Lily Allen when I saw her video for “LDN” and I was just thrilled. How can you deny a sweet British girl in a 50’s dress prancing down the street to a great pop song built over an authentic Jamaican ska song? Awesome! The whole record is just about as good. Her producers rely a lot on old ska and reggae and it just thrills me that she’s doing so well. This is the record that Gwen Stefani SHOULD have put out. Oh, and she’s covered the Specials and the Kaiser Chiefs. Great record. My only criticism is that she should lose her b*tchy side a bit and make it less bitter and a whole lot sweeter.

3. The Aggrolites - The Aggrolites

If you know the Aggrolites, then you know what to expect. I love The Aggrolites because they bring something fresh to the ska/reggae genre. They don’t try to mimic the past, but they definitely sound old school. They bring their own brand of low down funk to it that just floats my boat. And they’re not just playing reggae to their own crowd, but they’re accessible to everyone (the same thing that made Hepcat so great). I’ve been saying for over ten years now that Skinhead Reggae was my favorite type of music, and yet no current band has really been doing it right until The Aggrolites. Not to mention I had a blast touring with them over the summer.

2. I’m From Barcelona - Let Me Introduce My Friends

Now, for the total opposite of the Knife, (yet still just as Swedish), is I’m from Barcelona. It’s a group of around 30 of the happiest Swedish indie hipsters I’ve ever seen. The comparisons to the Polyphonic Spree are obvious and easy. These guys are less “Join with us, brother. You will never see your family again” and more like “Hi! We like you! Let’s have a picnic! You’re OK”. Less Patty Hearst and more Karen Carpenter (on a good day). I first listened to this record when I was driving from PA to Baltimore for the first time on a job interview and I was surprised at how each song just got better and better. Seriously, banjos, melodicas, beautiful backing vocals and endearing, encouraging lyrics. It’s just fantastic. I want everyone to hear it. It will make their lives better.

1. The Knife - Silent Shout

This was the big surprise upset for me. I heard about The Knife a while ago on Pitchfork and listened to about 10 seconds of one of their songs and dismissed it as pretentious arty crap (really? on pitchfork? wow!). Then once I started working at Virgin, Nick or Tesi or someone threw it on and I was like …eh. But listening to it, I tried fining fault and ended up saying “I could really get into this” And so I did. a LOT. I’ve been listened to this record a lot, and subsequently got into their older stuff, and it’s full of gems. But back to the record. It’s dark and electronic and spooky. A lot of the songs start with really disjointed noises that sorta fall into a rhythm and the song takes off from there. There occasional moments here that remind me of Vangelis or Tangerine Dream or something that should be on an 80’s sci-fi movie (”The Captain” could be straight out of Blade Runner, I swear.). The more I write about this record the stupider I sound, so I’ll just stop here - give it a fair shake. It’s really good.

HONORABLE MENTIONS

Gnarls Barkley - St. Elsewhere
Like the rest of the country, I loved “Crazy” and listened to it non-stop for a while. It was definitely the “Hey Ya” of 2006. The rest of the record is pretty good too. DJ Danger Mouse did miracles producing the Gorillaz “Demon Days” and he did some good producin’ here too. Cee-Lo is an amazing singer and the songs are catchy, dark and fun. They also made some great videos too. I hope they win a bunch of Grammys.

Easy All-Stars - Radiodread
Of all the gimmicky novel Radiohead cover albums, this one stands the best on its own. “Let Down (featuring Toots Hibbert)” is enough to make it alone, but the whole thing translated really well. The Easy All Stars (who formerly did “Dub Side of The Moon”) covered Radiohead’s “OK Computer” from beginning to end with different guest vocalists on each track. It would normally be quite a challenge, because it’s not the most straightforward album, but they really pulled it off. I love OK Computer and I love reggae, and they did it right.

Moneybrother - Pengabrosan
I’d be a really big jerk to leave this out. Moneybrother is one of my favorite bands of all time. My brother Parker and I are the unofficial US Moneybrother advocates. Anyhow, I like ‘em… Pengsbrosan (”money brother” in Swedish) is Anders Wendin’s little personal album for his homeland fans. Almost entirely in in his native tongue, it’s a collection of covers with some interesting guest spots. Howlin’ Pete Almquist (The Hives) shows up for a duet on an operation ivy cover, “Falling in Love (With Christmas)” is a re-working of an old Monster tune, and they do a great version of My Morning Jacket’s “Off The Record”. But the highlight for me was the single, “Dom vet ingenting om oss” (a cover of Tracey Ullman’s “They Don’t Care About Us” Awesome. If I could understand this album and they lost a few of the slower tracks, it would have cracked my top ten for sure.

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENTS

Gwen Stefani - The Sweet Escape
Gwen, Gwen, Gwen. I’ve stood faithfully behind you since the early days of No Doubt, and you’ve inspired me so many ways. I really liked “Love, Angel, Music, Baby” because it was a throwback to 80’s booty bass stuff like Expose and Debbie Deb. Awesome! The Sweet Escape was admittedly more “modern” but sheesh. I can’t stomach this. Where do you draw the line between winkingly doing a cheesy pop record for fun and churning out crap? One, maybe two good songs on this record. Let’s speed up the next No Doubt record already, okay?

The Flaming Lips - At War With The Mystics
I was sad to have to put this on the list. But COME ON! I loved the Flaming Lips freaky surreal sounds and stories on “Yoshimi”. It seemed like they came from another galaxy and it fascinated me. At War With The Mystics, despite the awesome artwork, is tremendously timely and preachy. Between sermons on atheism and hatred towards political conservatives, it comes off more like a rant from Al Franken or Bill Maher. And considering how increasingly political they’ve become the past year or two, it basically is. BOOOO!

Teddybears - Soft Machine
Okay, I love pretty much all the songs on this record. What’s the problem? Because this record came out 2 years ago! Without the “necessary” guest spots. Go listen to “Punkrocker” without Iggy Pop or “Yours To Keep” without Neneh Cherry. A million times better. Guys! We love you! Leave well enough alone!

Madness - Sorry

I ain't sorry!
Thank you Nutty Boys for putting out good music again.

Why I still love Scott Klopfenstein

Way back in... 1992(?) My cousins, The Schultzes were always known for having rad parties at their house. I think their house was more like a local hang out where people just stayed if they needed to. There was always something going on there every night and it was always a great time. Often they'd have bands play in their tiny living room.

One year, Nanette (Schultz) had a big birthday party. Scott Klopfenstein (my best friend at the time) and I went and had a blast. Space Monster "M" played. It was Christian's band long before the Aquabats. He wore a florescent pink gorilla suit with a bone necklce and wrestling mask. They played in the crowded living room and they had two guys exterminator jumpsuits and boxing gloves. They were actually throwing punches to keep the crowd back. I think they did a really dark messed up version of "Sugar Sugar" but that's all I remember about their music but it was definitely one of the scariest bands I ever saw.

Fresh Curd opened, which was Parka and The Seaghost's acoustic-y thing. I think they sang a song about pirates, but I don't remember fully.

Parker had hand-screened like 20 T-shirts for the show, each one unique. I think there was even a hypercolor one. Scott, Parker and I walked around the party trying to sell them all so he'd make his money back. I think we finally got rid of them. I had one for a long time, but I don't know what happened to it.

Then a few months ago, I found these pictures on someones
blog somewhere. It was from some Reel Big Fish fans who met Scott and took pics with him. Lo and behold, the legendary tee-shirt appeared before my eyes. I knew I must post it. I was so stoked to see that Scott still had his shirt and was wearing it out on tour.

I saw him at a show at Chain Reaction last year and we spent the whole time catching up. It was like old times all over again. I love that guy. Scott, if you're reading this, give me a call! If you're still living in NY, we need to hang out!!

Strange Manor - The Christmas Album (Vol. 1)!

    A++

I've been obsessed with Christmas music this year. Which makes me sad to say that the G13 Christmas EP didn't happen. Oh well, maybe next year...

Anyhow, my brother Christian lent this CD to me last week and I was SO stoked. One of his Phenomenaut buddies gave it to him. It features members of the Aggrolites, Phenomenauts, the Struts, the Soul Captives and Go Jimmy Go. This is my #1 holiday pick this year. The bluebeat, rocksteady, northern soul, and straight up true to the classics of pop-Christmas yester year( c'mon, The Chipmunks!!) seriously satisfied just what I've been pining for this Christmas. Obviously not the most professionally recorded album but the musicianship and orchestration is still top notch. There is definitely a fun, family-type feel that comes through on this recording that makes me wish that I too lived at Strange Manor. Thanks guys and merry Christmas!

    Merry Christmas from Moneybrother!

Hardcore Monster fans like me should get a kick out of this song...
It's a reworking of their B-side "Falling in Love".

English Beat-inspired track from... The SHINS?!

Check out this B-side (to Phantom Limb) by The Shins "Split Needles (Alt Version)". I was blown away to hear how rocking, energetic and almost ska-y it is! Especially if you've heard the original version. You can definitely hear "Mirror in the Bathroom" in there... plus I love the new-wavey keyboards... awesome.

    Download it here via prefixmag.com

"Wincing The Night Away" isn't out until January, but like most of the other evil pirates out there, I've been rocking it for the past couple of months. And... IT. IS. AWESOME.

Moon Records - Skaface Comp 1988

Here a sample of something from my record collection. It's out of print, so I don't feel wrong posting a little nugget.

Ska Face!! The first American ska comp by Moon Records in 1988. This beauty contains recording debuts of bands like Let's Go Bowling, Donkey Show, No Doubt and Skankhead (the pre-Skankin' Pickle.) I love it so much I''d buy it again. Rad cover art by (I believe) Bob Fingerman who also did The Toasters Skaboom! cover. The tracklisting is as follows

    TRACKS -
Side 1: Toasters: ska killers; Bim Skala Bim: shoes; Rhyth o matics: skatalation; The Scofflaws: rudy's back; Donkey Show: feeling nice; Let's Go Bowling: b*t@h
Side 2: New York Citizens: dance; Crucial DBC: don't run away; No Doubt: everything's wrong; The Boilers: bal man jump; Skankhead: circus skank; Thick As Thieves: 12th street; Exterminators: big talker

Do you like No Doubt? I do...did...do. Well, I like this song alot.
  • No Doubt - Everything's Wrong

  • P.S. I love hearing your feedback!

    Thursday, November 16, 2006

Moneybrother just made my day and broke my heart at the same time. They plan to release a new cover record, "Pengabrorsan" in only a few weeks. Great news, right? Well, it's a swedish-only limited release! nooooo!! Oh well, based on the new video, "Dom vet ingenting om oss" they've cheered up a little from "To Die Alone"... Which is great news! Apparently some of the bands they're covering are Donna Summer, Operation Ivy, My Morning Jacket, and Otis Clay. There's also duets with Jerry Williams and "Howlin" Pelle Almqvist from The Hives. It looks like they also have a song called "Falling in love (with Christmas Time)". How amazing is that? Maybe it's a Monster cover. One can only dream...

    Dolly Madison Cupcake Commercial

Ok, so this pretty much won't be special to anyone besides me and Parka, but I thought I'd post it anyway. Here's a commercial for Dolly Madison Cupcakes featuring an angel (our older sister Rachel) and a devil (a pre-superstardom Corey Feldman). It's lame, but good for a laugh.

Elvis Costello - I Can't Stand Up For Falling Down

According to Record Collector (No 91): " Costello had been signed to Radar in 1978, via a licensing deal from Riviera Global Productions. Radar collapsed towards the end of 1979, and so Elvis's manager Jake Riviera alighted upon the Specials' 2-Tone label as an ideal venue for a holding operation - a one-off single - until Elvis sorted out a deal for the Get Happy!! album. WEA, who had distributed Radar, were less than delighted: they felt they had a stake in Costello's career by virtue of the success of the records they had distributed for him, and so they obtained a court injunction to stop the 2-Tone single being sold.

By March '80, the situation was clarified: F-Beat was set up by Riviera as an independent company, but WEA continued to distribute their records. In the meantime, there were several thousand 2-Tone singles to dispose of. These were handed out free to the audience at a London's Rainbow Theatre gig. Several months later, Riviera pressed up a few thousand more of the 2-Tone singles, and these were given away at London and US gigs".

Today: Disney's Gummi Bears out on DVD

Yaaaaay! I'm very excited about this release. I loved the Gummi Bears! Seasons 1-3. It was was my favorite show, and that's not because it features the voice talent of my elder brother Christian as Cavin (who played him until his voice changed) and the legendary Bill Scott, AKA THEE Bullwinkle who played Gruffi (until his heart attack). This show was brilliant for it's time. Action, adventure and Gummi Beary Juice. Help a brother out! Pick it up today!

    Slade's Skinhead Phase

Slade explains (and basically apologizes for) their skinhead phase early on in their career. Funny, though, because I like 'em anyway and I think the song they're playing is pretty nice... But it definitely doesn't look right.

(Not French) Pop Thursday: Majestic 12 | Nothing on TV

Circa: 1996, from the genius mind of Scott Schultz, aka "The Sea Ghost","Harry S. Schultz","Phantasmo Del Mar" and also, "My Cousin Scotty", came the MJ-12 who later evolved into the brighter, poppier "Majestic". This entire album was beautiful and horribly under-rated. That was my post mission soundtrack. I listened the crap out of it. Scott is also the co-creator of Yo Gabba Gabba. I love him. I attended the Newport Beach Temple with him and my brother Christian this morning. We were edified. But I digress...

    Petter feat. The Club Killers

Swedish rapper, Petter featured Club Killers on one of his songs, "Vad Som Går Runt Kommer Tillba" from his 2004 CD, "Ronin". As a bonus treat, Anders Wendin (aka Moneybrother) is featured on another track,"Showdown", which I like even better.

Here are both songs. Because I love you.

    The Club Killers

Kids, it's time we get to know the Club Killers. You might already know that Tyler and I are the Nation's advocates for Sweden's Monster and MoneyBrother. GOGO13 even wrote a song about it. I feel like we are America's only fans. I say that because when Moneybrother played last year at the Troubador(their first American gig) we were the only ones that were there for Moneybrother and greeting them as fans. Yes they are genius and they've even won a Grammy in Sweden but nobody in the states has heard of them. Well regardless, Gustav Bendt and Viktor Brobacke of both Monster and MoneyBrother have put together the Club Killers. A 15 piece club ska, r'n'b and reggae power house. I believe the line-up also includes members of Ska Wars.
Now watch this video. I mean it.
Now go buy the album....and then buy me one.

    The Ghastly Ones

How more appropriate for Halloween than the Ghastly Ones? I didn't realize that they had recently put out this new green 45" until I stumbled across their website. I want to make a 7"! OK then I must. Also, check out this theme song for the Spongebob Squarepants Halloween episode.

French Pop Thursday - M. Gainsbourg Revisited

Last year this tribute album came out and I just discovered it a few weeks ago. You'd think I'd be on top of this, considering... It's a compilation of modern indie/alt artists covering songs by Mr. Serge Gainsbourg, but the twist is, the songs have all been translated into english. The end result is expectedly a mixed bag of good, bad and ugly, but it's definitely worth checking out. The Franz Ferdinand / Jane Birkin song is pretty rocking and Portishead's version is pretty faithful while still sounding like Portishead. Meanwhile, Placebo proceeds to destroy one of Serge's most beautiful songs and there's some unecessary stuff in there.

Truth be told most of this is pretty unecessary and it's disappointing that a lot of these songs are from his 70's era hits, but if you like Serge, it's interesting to hear the translations. Worth checking out though.

And if you're not familiar with Serge Gainsbourg, then I implore you to discover this genius for yourself.

    01. Franz Ferdinand & Jane Birkin - A Song for Sorry Angel (Sorry Angel)
    02. Cat Power & Karen Elson - I Love You (Me Either) (Je T'aime Mon Non Plus)
    03. Jarvis Cocker & Kid Loco - I Just Came to Tell You that I'M Going (Je Suis Venu Te Dire Que Je M'en Vais)
    04. Portishead - Requiem for Anna (Un Jour Comme Un Autre - Anna)
    05. Faultline, Brian Molko & Françoise Hardy - Requiem for A Jerk (Requiem Pour Un Con)
    06. Michael Stipe - L'hôtel (L'hôtel Particulier)
    07. Tricky - Au Revoir Emmanuelle (Goddbye Emmanuelle)
    08. Marianne Faithfull & Sly and Robbie - Lola R. for Ever (Lola Rastaquoučre)
    09. Gonzales, Feist & Dani - Boomerang 2005 (Comme Un Boomerang)
    10. Marc Almond & Trash Palace - Boy Toy (I'M the Boy)
    11. Placebo - the Ballad of Melody Nelson (Ballade De Melody Nelson)
    12. The Rakes - Just A Man with A Job (Le Poinçonneur Des Lilas)
    13. The Kills - I Call it Art (La Chanson De Slogan)
    14. Carla Bruni - Those Little Things (Ces Petits Riens)

    Rancid last night

I wrote this whole insightful review on last night's Rancid show at the Henry Fonda theatre in Hollywood and I accidentally quit out of safari so I lost it. Anyhow, I don't want to type it again, so to recap.

    - I went with the Bat Commander to Rancid.
    - Our friend Craig bought us delicious su$hi. Thanks Craig.
    - Met Lars (again) and Matt. Nice guys.
    - Saw the (legendary) Adolescents play.
    - Chatted with Tony Hawk (Christian's old pal) and his new wife.
    - Rancid rocked with their new video screen (Thank to the Aquabats)
    - Rancid played acoustic on the encore.
    - Rancid played Operation Ivy's, "Knowledge".
    - I like that I could've sung along to every song because I knew them all...Even if some lyrics are indecipherable. Like, I knew when Tim was going to sing "blooka mooka blingy bungy buh"
    - Got an "Out Comes the Wolves" picture disk autographed by the whole band. Plus some more free schwag for my wife.
    -Yaaay for Rancid!
    - Thanks Christian

    American 2 tone (Almost)

The Nails are the new wave New York band that brought us, "88 Lines about 44 women" in the early eighties. A song to live forever to on KROQ's flashback lunch. Rewind a few years back and they played the ska. 1980! That predates the Toasters...heck that's the Specials era. Here's the page I found the single on:The Nails

Skavoovie & The Epitones - Growler

    via:You & Me on a Jamboree!

Anybody remember Boston's, "Skavoovie & The Epitones"? An amazing bunch of talented high school kids that rose big in the ska boom of the latter 90's. They used to tour in this rad black and white school bus. They weren't ever my favorite but they were very credible in the fact that they were musicians first. Comparable to Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, they were a large ensemble that also were conscious of their stage presence and image.
This album was their lesser known effort and ultimately their last. Much more diverse than their debut, "Fat Footin". I know that Chris Murray was somehow involved in the production of the album, and contributed the first track "Boyo". Boyo was an old King Apparatus song and is also featured on Chris Murray's "4-Trackaganza".
Songs that appealed to me was, "Boyo", "The Coffee Connection" and "Zombie Song". But what sticks out to me the most was "Salad Days" this song could singularly signify the end of the what people called the 3rd Wave of ska. The "Ghost Town" for the 90's. This song is meant to tell us that party isn't over and Skavoovie & The Epitones will outlive all of the crappy ska bands out there (for we all know there were so many). "...It's not the end of the salad days...". But what really happened? Skavoovie & The Epitones broke up. It was not only the end of the salad days but the end of the Epitones. By 1999, Ska was tired. "Salad Days" signifies that it was over by simply calling attention to it. Oh the irony.

    Ebay find: Magic Chicken Hits!

I remember making this years ago! Autographed by the Aquabats, The Professor and the Pigbat, this was the Magic Chicken's celebrity playlist CD mix. This cover was supposed to look like a record that you'd find in a 1960's bargain bin. We made 20 and sold them only once at a show in San Diego. It was a silly idea, but we (I mean,"the Magic Chicken") sold them all quickly. Now someone else is trying to cash in on it today. You go, ebay person!

    New Song from the Uptones

Before Rancid, before Skankin' Pickle, before Operation Ivy there were the Uptones. Berkeley legends, they claim to be California's first ska band. You might recall Rancid's cover of "Get Outta My Way!"
I think they're still pretty great. Here's a new cut from the upcoming album Skankin Fools Unite(?)

The Go-Go's - Turn To You

From the 1984 album,"Talk Show", "Turn To You" was a lesser known Go-Go's tune but had the greatest impact on me. I guess it was because I love this video so much. This early 60's high school rock & roll prom video was meant as nostalgic kitsch for the grown-ups of the 80s, but for a young impressionable kid living in a retarded Michael Jackson world of wack, this was utopia. Nothing's cooler than that era. Go figure, "That Thing You Do!" winds up one of my favorite movies of all time. Aside from the fact that the Go-Go's were gorgeous as both men and women, this song rocks! The driving powers chords, the back-up harmonies, the Belinda's growl, everything in this song to me was perfect.

Sorry for all the youtube posts, but garsh! Youtube is a miracle. About 10 years ago, I thought I was bad like Michael Jackson for having a copy of this cover song dubbed on cassette. The legendary Mummies playing Devo. Two great tastes that taste great together. Happy Halloween!

    The Piranhas - Tom Hark

I pulled this out of the massive, "songs G13 should cover" pile. It's the Piranhas version of the old tune, "Tom Hark". I know of a Millie Small ska version and also a skinhead reggae version by The Dynamites. But what makes this important (other than it charting in the top ten) is it that it later became a footie anthem that is still chanted by British sports fans and hooligans to this day. It has later been repackaged and marketed directly to soccer (I'm sorry, Futbol) fans and even covered by Seagulls Ska and our beloved Bad Manners.

The Piranhas were a punk band from Britian's briny blue beaches of Brighton. "Tom Hark" entered the charts in 1980; smack dab in the middle of the whole 2-tone craze. I understand that since they were primarily a punk band with no follow up ska song to match, The Piranhas fell into the pigeon hole of "the one-hit wonders" and broke up. Super catchy song though, eh?

Here they are in all of their glory as #26 on Top of the Pops. I love the drum kit set up in the front and the fishes for drum sticks. Hey! What's with the guitar playing with gloves on! We know you guys are lip synching and you know you guys are lip synching...could you try a little harder and fake it for us better? :D

This is what I'm all about.

    Azure Ray- New Resolution

In this video, a scooter gang gives a ride to a couple on their way to the Lillith Fair while they lip sync a song that's reminds me a lot of "All Tomorrows Parties" by The Velvet Underground. Very Odd indeed. Someone's got to know where this scooter club is from!

    Redeeming Shawshank

So last year when I saw the ever-so-brilliant recut Shining trailer, i was inspired to do something similar... I wanted to take a very solemn movie and turn it into another dumb Vince Vaughn / Owen Wilson comedy... so I started working on this - "Redeeming Shawshank" and 10 months later it's finally finished. I think it turned out pretty well. Anyhow, check it out.

    B.H.R.

It's your favorite early nineties hardcore punk band! B.H.R.! What does does B.H.R. stand for? Butt Hole Rebellion? Big Honkey Rednecks? By Heavenly Request? Beelzebub's Honor Roll? Who cares! It's punk rock! Aargh! You might recall B.H.R. from such hits as, "Trestles Will Be Mine", "Beaners Stuck Underwater" and "Psycho Grandma". I just came across this album last night and for some reason it made me pretty happy.
Here's a couple of MP3 tracks for your punk rock pleasure.

  • Dr.Martens

  • Everything

  • Here's the back cover. The shirtless guy singing is my friend Mark "The Shark" Howe. He was also in this surf-punk outfit known as "The Immortals". He's still rockin' out today, but I don't recall who he's playing with now.

What a handsome bunch of decent looking young men...wait...is...that...

    Some Things Speak For Themselves

Oi! This Is England (Teaser Trailer)

I saw this on the Dancin' Mood Board. "Oi! This Is England" is an upcoming film by British filmmaker, Shane Meadows. Set in 1983, It's an autobiographical look at his growing up in England as a young skinhead who runs in with the National Front. At first I was put off by the thought of yet ANOTHER movie about racist skins... then I saw the trailer and was blown away. I couldn't believe how great this looks. Finally, the accurate movie about skinheads that I've been waiting for! I'm just sad I didn't make it. :)

It recently screened at the London Film Festival and now they have a teaser/trailer up.

    CHECK THIS TRAILER OUT!

EDIT: Parka couldn't see it at worked so I did the world a favor and YouTube'd it.

    Ska - For ska's sake - Various Artists 1989

It's hard to express the effect this album had on me. This represents the state of European ska 10 years after 2-tone.
Some of this is so cheesy and some of this is brilliant. But for the teenage me it was a musical salvation and I was too young to decifer the difference. "Another Town" by Mr. Review remains one of my favorite songs of all time. "Skadansk" by Mark Foggo's Skasters is SO cheeseball that I couldn't handle it. But today I celebrate you, Mark! I Celebrate you all!
I hope you enjoy...this is my youth.

The Jam - Marc Bolan Show - All Around The World Live

OK so this isn't my first time posting something about the Jam, but I had to share. My friend Micah told me about this and it's pretty amazing. The Jam guest starring on the Marc Bolan(from T. Rex) Show. This shows how strange mod was emerging from the glam era. Marc Bolan is so regal! So amazing, so bizarre.

    "Jam!"

    So dude, where's Tyler?

I'm so tired of having to repeat myself so I'll let Edward say it for me.

I'd assume that I wasn't credited because it was some quick last minute freelance. Regardless, I'm very grateful for the oppurtunity to do it. Thanks you Mike Moon!
